Baltimore Summer Forecast 2014 (Including Ocean City Maryland)

The climatological summer begins on June 1, but the seasonal calendar says June 21. Either way summer is here and many are wondering how it might play out for the beache. It may just be a tale of two summers with a slow start in temps and a toasty finish with several heatwaves.  The Great Lakes have been cold all Spring and this has had an impact as far south as the Mid Atlantic region.

Lake Superior over Memorial Day weekend 2014. Would you go in for a swim

Temps were 5 degrees below normal for March, near normal for April, and slightly above average for May. June will have a higher than normal number of days with thunderstorms, some will be severe. We'll settle into a normal Summer pattern for July but August will be hot. The dog days of summer will be in full force in August with many days at or above 90 degrees and a heat index to tinker with 100 degrees, ugh.  Overall the summer is slightly above normal for temps

The graph above shows the big push toward El Nino with most of it coming in the fall and winter.  It could start as early as mid to late June or as late as August but all signs point to El Nino.  El Nino also tends to put a halt to the hurricane season as west to east winds shear off the top of developing tropical systems.

As far as rainfall it's gonna be a good one for the lawns, plants, backyard gardens and trees. Rain will fall at just the right time throughout the Summer.  If you are looking for some good tomatoes in the garden this may be the summer for you. The beach outlook is great. More than 70% of the weekends from late May to early September will bring great weather. Plan those trips down the shore this will be a good summer for many days in the ocean or just being lazy in your beach chair.
