Mutiple quakes rocked the Santa Cruz Islands region after 3:00 p.m. local time Feb 5, 2013.
The quakes ranged from magnitude 5.6 to 8.0, according to the USGS.
The quakes prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a warning for parts of the pacific located near the origin of the quake including Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna.
Watches have been issued for several areas including New Zealand and Australia.
The PTWC states that an evaluation is underway and there is possibility that Hawaii could be elevated to watch or warning status.
