March 6-7 Snow (PHL DC BWI NYC ABE)

March is gonna come in with a blocking pattern and that means a shot at snow from DC north as a wave of storms roll across the USA. Now in March you have some good news and some bad news if you like snow.

The good news is ample moisture from the south and warmer waters off the Atlantic to make a possible super storm like we saw in 1717, 1888 & 1993.  These storms became historic and dumped feet of snow from GA to ME.

The bad news is water surface temps and temps to to 5000 feet. The warmer sun angle makes a March snow storm that much harder to occur and make the snow stick but yes it has happen over the years.

The Euro has been hinting at a snowstorm for days now but as usual you have to watch the flash in the pan type of model runs. We do have many favorable factors into this possible storm so lets take a look.

SO LETS LOOK AT THE SIGNALS

The GFS has the storm on the new run just in but plays of the Colder Deeper AO (Arctic Oscillation) and drives the storm south of DC right now. Could that means a VA NC snow storm in March? Maybe. I recall a storm back in 1983 that did that just thing nailing the south with a rare late winter storm along I-95 in NC and SC. I drove in that storm and was stick for hours so I remember it very very well.

Do you see the blue line on the map above? That is the 540 snow line. This line dives south and cuts the path way south off the Arctic intrusion for the March 5-7 period on the GFS. Now I expect that to change a bit later this week so March 1 (Friday) is the time to really watch this maybe end of winter system.

MY THINKING AT THIS POINT...

For the Philly-Baltimore-DC Metro area this may very well be the last big shot at snow this winter. Watch I say that now and bang we'll get a late March early April snow.  The parameters are there for a storm it's gonna be all about how much blocking we can get up north and just the right amount of cold (not too much or too little). We need to thread the needle here to get this storm but it's a shot at this point that is worth watching heading into early next week.
