I can almost pinpoint the starting dateline when our weather around here began a change for the weird.
It was Mid November 1989, a crazy frontal system moved thru and caused incredible wind damage including tornadoes in the Eastern half of the Country. Then we went into a very cold pattern which included a Thanksgiving snowstorm.
We had very cold air last into the end of December, then winter ended abruptly cold wise. That Jan/Feb was eventless and very warm at times, much like some mid 2000's winters.
Since this event or time period our weather around here has been absolutely abnormal relative to what we were used too prior to the end of 1989.
Basically since the 1990 decade began we have witnessed some very crazy, topsy turvy, unconventional weather events. It seems like we are culminating with the most recent events of vicious, angry systems that have been more destructive than I can ever remember. Severe weather in winter never happened on a scale in which we witnessed recently.
Of course bad weather happened back in the day prior to November 1989, but it was expected during the time of the season it occurred.
Anyone have any thoughts or agree, or disagree feel free to comment.
Well, I will have to ask my cat if she is available for Groundhog duty, but she doesn't go out or travel well in the car to go out there; LOL.Punx phil is the "rock star " out there.
I heard today a new study confirms cats are , 'Surprise' rodent and bird killers, maybe we can get someone to let a cat loose into Punx's abode and scare him back into his hideout. LOL
78 Yanks; good story. Drove to Warrington, Pa on the main roads and we did ok. Thinking back to that storm and what has been going on the past few years, it seems that we can never tell what Mother Nature has up her sleeve. I heard Punx Phil may have snow for his big day on Sat; LOl. That would surely add to the fun at Gobblers Knob.
Long Beach Island I had 8"+ rear wheel drive, got stuck it was rather deep. It lasted on the ground for a while.
I was driving a cab a few days later at night, I warned the dispatcher to tell the other drivers too watch out for Black Ice. He responded by saying "What the H is Black Ice", I was 20 years younger than the guy, he had no idea what I was talking about.
I remember the Thanksgiving storm very well; 5" of snow, but we made it to dinner anyway. You just never know what Mother Nature has in store for us next.
Been reading this site for 2 years and just joined. I live near Richmond, Va. I remember '89 well. Snowed 9" here (Richmond) around the 13th of Dec and stayed on the ground for the rest of the month. Parents and brother came up from Florida for Christmas and froze their butts off! Then I remember playing basketball at the park in January and February in shorts and t-shirts. That was the winter I first realized one half of winter is usually colder and one half warmer for most winters.
