Ok so we have had officially the following numbers at the following locations this winter vs. the average snowfall
THE NORTHEAST
Allentown PA 7.4"
New York Central Park 5.1"
Boston Logan Airport 3.8"
Baltimore BWI 1.4"
Philadelphia 1.1"
Wilmington DE 0.7"
Atlantic City 0.4"
Washington National 0.2"
THE MIDWEST
Minneapolis 16.8"
Indianapolis 15.3"
Detroit MI 11.6"
Milwaukee 7.0"
Chicago 1.3"
THE LAKE SNOW BELT
Syracuse NY 39.3"
Binghamton 27.6"
Rochester 27.3"
Buffalo NY 23.0"
Cleveland OH 15.5"
Many locations are below normal for the season and we'll see that for the next 10 days but some signs of change will happen after that. Chicago is in its second year in a row of a snow drought and the Northeast cities are not far behind here in early January.
So can we find some good ole fashion snowstorms for the rest of this winter ? The answer is yes but we gotta dig for them.
So the GFS is not all that active until after the 15th so expect a milder and at times wet pattern for the East Coast.
MY THINKING AT THIS POINT....
The ridge (High Pressure) in the east has been the snow drought maker so far so we'll see how this plays out for the second half of January. We show you the models and patterns we don't make the snow...I wish we could.
A word of caution...after reading the comments below I convinced that everyone has written off February already 24 days from now. Hey it's your call on the comments but I would never make a forecast for no snow 24-52 days away. THINK SNOW YA'LL
5" or less for Philly this year. Back to back dismal winters. After back to back historic winters. Something else besides climate and and global warming is happening. HAARP has only been active since 07 in Alaska. Makes ya wonder.
Wow, once Kevin Reilly has nothing good to say you know we are in bad shape. I had some high hopes for this winter but it's just not our year again. This area is really turning into a feast or famine region for snow.
The 16-18 threat is for the Poconos north and west, thinking coastal plain has to wait for this to pass to see some "cold enough" for snow airmass to move in around here.
Hurricane says it can change just for the fact that its Janurary. Mid west gets really cold next week.We should see a piece of that in ten days or around the 17th.In the mean time Im golfing tomorrow and this weekend.Four!
I was so looking forward to a non snow drought winter, but alas, we got a repeat of last year thus far. Very disappointing. After this warm up, we are down to 6 weeks of true winter to get some snow. It's going quickly :-(
I am becoming less excited about cold and snow in the future for any period in January.
I have been looking over the NAO, AO, PNA>.. but lately none of these forecasts have come true when they are shown.....almost like the models are forecasting another ERA and not catching onto reality a STRONG SOUTHEAST RIDGE around here equals BIG TIME WARMTH AND NO SNOW for as far as the eye can see at this point..
Something else is at work here and it is not the computers but rather Climate Change or Global Warming... we are looking at temps +20 above normal over a HUGE chuck of the nation again... time to wake up.
I hear ya Rich....been a weird winter so far...lots of promise in November and December had a few bursts at best. We still have a lot of time left so keep the faith.
The snow in Philly is hardly worth mentioning since temperatures were above freezing except for grass nothing stuck.
As far as looking ahead its the same 10 day wait for something that never comes and the when you have to dig for snow instead of digging (shoveling) snow you know you are in trouble.
Even with the call for cold at the end of the month the southeast ridge still has to be dealt with ,the cold cant be too strong as to suppress systems and the subtropical jet has to be active ,in other words everything has to go just right, which hasn't happened the last two winters .
