Hurricane Matthew will go down as one of the bigger hurricanes of all-time but not in the top 10 as far as wind and storm surge. The death will be high in Haiti (1000+) and the flooding severe in FL SC GA NC with some places getting over 18" of rain in spots. Matthew was briefly a Category 5 before it slammed into Haiti and Cuba as a Category 4 hurricane. Parts of Western Haiti were cut off from the rest of the nation and this caused many problems with rescue efforts after the storm moved into the Bahamas. The central Bahamas took a big hit but the bigger populated areas of Nassua did much better as far as damage.
The storm pushed to the East Coast of Florida but the infamous Wonderful Wobble saved the Florida coast from a true direct hit and keep most of the storm on the weaker western side. The storm just missed making landfall over Cape Canaveral FL at the Space Center before moving north just offshore of Jacksonville. The actual landfall was in South Carolina on Saturday, October 8 just south of Charleston over the marshes and lowland of SC. The storm pumped out tremendous rainfall and flooding in GA and SC with Florida not far behind. Up to 15" rain has fallen in Jasper Co SC just northwest of Hilton Head SC.
